Leo Lewis' Philosophy
For as long as I can remember, I have been involved in sport and physical activity. The desire, dedication, and discipline that were needed for me to excel in sport were met with unique challenges and experiences that will never be forgotten. Sport played a large part in developing my identity and character. In school, I was known primarily for my athletic success. That success however, gave me the self-confidence to pursue other endeavors such as academic success.
My parents were avid participants. My Dad was a professional football player and coach, and my Mom was a physical education teacher. They did not push me into sport, but easily became my role models through their leadership and modeling of work ethics and moral character. My long-term success however, was attributed to their insistence that I get a good education. I felt fortunate because I had two parents who were interested in my well-being, and devoted the time to guide and develop me during my youth. I was exposed to a number of extended family members, teachers, and coaches, who supported me as I developed strong personal and career goals.
I was fortunate to have the athletic and academic abilities, a great support system consisting of my family and coaches and a great desire to help others achieve their goals. As a college instructor and sport consultant, I am in constant contact with athletes on all levels. I have noticed that many young men and women have difficulty with their dual role as athlete and student, and often have little support for their young career goals.
By using sport to improve life management skills, I have noticed that athletes of all ages are better equipped to handle their life challenges. My mission is to provide long-term resources for young people and their unique challenges as students and as athletes.
That’s why I created the Lewis Sports Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to providing resources to all of our youth in various communities for the development of lifeskills through education and physical activity. By partnering with parents, teachers, schools, corporations and social service agencies various programs are developed to provide educational and mentoring activities for young people regarding their health, wellness and fitness.
